Playing ‘Mercutio’ in Erica Whyman’s ‘Romeo&Juliet’ at the RSC was a bit of a dream come true. We opened at the RSC in Stratford Upon Avon in 2018. We played the Barbican, London in 2019, before going on a National Tour. We were also filmed and live-screened into cinemas. What a job, I proper loved it!
Team: Long list of beautiful people. Details here.
Interviews: RSC Video interview. I was also asked to write a blog .
We’re on BBCiPlayer. Check out the brilliant education department, doing amazing things with young people.
Personal: What was hard: Believing I deserved to be there. Blocked by old ideas about gender and class. I needed to give myself a confidence boost daily. The whole job was nearly 18-months, so staying fresh, healthy and passionate took discipline. What I’m most proud of: I worked really hard, gave it my all, and enjoyed it. I received some beautiful messages from young women and queer kids who said they’d been inspired by my performance. I also had a personal revolution and I’m now proud to be queer & trans. What I learnt: That Shakespeare isn’t for silly posh people. That I really care about the work and will push myself way further than is strictly necessary. How to perform a massive part on a huge stage. How big stories are told. To have a list of people (5 max) to make the work for, and to keep a polite neutral reaction to anyone who’s not on your list (a Brene Brown idea).
